Abstract:
The temperature dependence of the radiation of freshwater ice at a frequency of 15 GHz has been experimentally investigated. The temperature range adjacent to the ice-water phase transition point has been studied. The measurements were carried out at an air temperature of 294 K. The ice temperature varied from 266 K to 273 K. Radiometer central frequency was 15 GHz. The derivative of the radio radiance or brightness temperature on the ice temperature varies from – 0.2 to – 0.7. The change of the derivative near the phase transition point was explained by the influence of liquid water in ice. A significant temperature difference between ambient air and ice leads to an increase in the mass of liquid water in ice. Liquid water is formed in micro cavities in the volume of ice. Water can also form on the air-ice boundary, while the temperature in the ice volume remains negative. The layer of liquid water at the ice-air interface, as well as its inclusions in ice cavities, make a significant contribution to the self-radiation of the thermodynamic system under study, since the signal frequency is close to the maximum frequency of the liquid water spectrum. The observed effect can be used for radiometric monitoring of the state of snow and ice formations and registration of the initial stages of ice melting
