Svetlana V. Ilvitskaya, Doctor of Architecture, Professor. At present, she is the Head of the Architecture Sub-department of the Faculty Department of the State University of Land Use Planning, Advisor of Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, member of the Academy of Architectural Heritage, associate member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and member of the Academy of Professional Education, Member of the Union of Architects of Russia, Union of Designers of Moscow, the European Commission for Small Towns and Settlements of Russia, the Union of Journalists of Moscow, the Federal Academic Methodological Association for Architecture and of editorial boards of a number of journals listed by State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles SCOPUS (Architecture and Construction of Russia, Arta of the Moldova Academy of Sciences, Bulletin of the Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov (BSTU), etc). She is the author of more than 200 scientific and educational works, monographs and study guides published in Russia and abroad in Russian and foreign languages (French, English, Italian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Czech)

Dmitry N. Shchepetkov, architect. He graduated from MARKHI in 1993. At present he is an Associate Professor of the Temple Architecture sub-department of MARKHI.

Michael M. Chervyakov, Ph.D. In 2001, he graduated from Penza Architecture and Construction Academy with specialty in Architecture. At present, he is an Associate Professor of the Architecture Sub-department of the Faculty Department of the State University of Land Use Planning. His key research interests: recognition of architectural images in different lighting conditions, technical linguistics, heuristics and creative process (image constructing)

Abstract:

Despite Orthodox Christian temples have been actively being built over the last years in Moscow (as part of its programme of building 200 Orthodox churches), the problem of temple illumination is still understudied, and in view of this, the article addresses the temple interior architecture as a set of illuminated spatial compartments (temple zones) with different area lighting. A number of concepts is stated including the following: 1) a luminous environment of a temple is designed as a combined system of natural, artificial, and mixed interior lighting interacting with its architecture and decorations including light accents as well as different lighting effects within the interior; 2) temple illumination has several functions: assisting in church services, arrangement of spaces and compositions, visual and symbolic function, and utility function and, with all importance of daylight temple illumination, artificial and mixed illumination has the main semantic priority of temple lighting.
